On the fence

Over the last few days, Dave’s been working on the new fence to replace the old, crappy one that blew down in the big storm.

And he’s done a wonderful job. He made it to match our neighbour’s fence to the left (which you can just see the edge of). All that’s left if the gate, which he will be finishing today. And once he gets all his tools out of there, it’s up to me to make the new space look pretty.

By moving the fence, it’s given me an area about 15′ x 15′, all in shade, to create a new garden space.

To that end, I’ve been plant shopping.

The Heuchera (Coral Bells) have done so well in the shade by the driveway, that I got more for under the tree here. There’s four different ones.

And I got these two. It might be too dry under the tree for the bugbane, but I think it’s worth a try. The Astilbe has a really pretty leaf. I’ve not had much luck with Astilble, so I’m hoping this one does ok.

And naturally, I got some woodland natives…

I also got some of these…

Yes. I got some hostas. They are not my favourite plants, but I can’t deny they they grow well in shade! And I’ve got a big space to fill!

Oh Valerie, a blank canvas! And all in the shade. The fence looks great. Your choice of plants are wonderful. I too never have had luck with astilbe, I hope yours takes. Are you finding your “Ontario Natives” at a proper green house, not at a grocery store? I must stop at our two local greenhouses and see what is still available. I never cared for hostas until we bought our first home in 1996. Our back garden was total shade and the previous owners had planted them. We now have what we call “The transformer garden” (hideous thing at the edge of our yard) that is shaded most of the day by our big maple. I think I have seven hostas in there trying to hide the transformer. They have grown huge over the last six years. Have fun planting!❤️

    1. I have got some natives from the grocery store, though this batch (and my Mexican Hat, and a couple others from earlier this year) came from a Nursery on the way to Sarnia called Sipkenshttps://www.sipkensnurseries.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwlJimBhAsEiwA1hrp5kv4NMXfBrB-t7wyJyr9phSLMfT8Uu1FVazF3xI2G5iX3VuSVmv2QBoCg7QQAvD_BwE.

I’ve been tempted to order from this place too https://onplants.ca/ But I haven’t tried them yet. You need to purchase a minimum of 18 plants, and it’s been fairly easy to get natives elsewhere. ________________________________

  2. I never was a fan of hostas until we moved into this house. They are the perfect filler plant for the shade. I have one that is right out in the brilliant sun and even that one is doing well.

Have fun making your new space pretty.

All I have are hostas. I’m so glad they come in lots of colors and sizes. They are so pretty when they bloom but cutting all those flower stalks off when they are done is a pain. I think The Mister counted over a 100 of them this year.

The fence is looking great! Your plans for the new garden area sound wonderful. With the various garden areas you now have, you have so many options.

  5. Dave did a beautiful job on the fence. I’m very impressed. I could never grow hostas before. I would kill them so fast in Spokane, but at the house here, the previous owner had planted a LOT of them and they did well for the two summers we were there. I’ve always thought they were pretty with all of the different varieties.
Have fun filling up that big space!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy
