Mincing

One of my favourite treats of the season is Mincemeat pie. Mom always used to make it for me, and when I moved out, I made it every year if we weren’t making it to Christmas dinner at Mom’s . But then COVID hit… and the brand of jarred mincemeat I normally bought stopped making it. And I couldn’t find anything to replace it. In 2021, I finally found a very fancy, expensive brand. And it was HORRIBLE.

Last year, it was the only thing I could find, so I did without. This year, it looked like it was going to be the only brand on the shelves again (most stores don’t even carry mincemeat at all), so I decided to just bite the bullet and make it myself.

It turned out to be even easier to make than I thought – basically just toss it all into a pot, and simmer. I made it up Thursday night, and yesterday, I scooped it all into tart shells.

It certainly smelled like mincemeat. How did it taste….? well the few bits I ate off the spoon when I was done tasted pretty good. But I’m saving the actual tarts for after our Christmas dinner, which we are doing today.

There will also be….

Apple pie (Dave’s favourite) and Pumpkin pie.

And butter tarts too… but I didn’t take a picture of them.

I’ll report back on the mincemeat success soon…

Valerie, everything looks incredible. We must have mincemeat tarts here at this time of year too. Not a fan of them myself but Chuck LOVES them. My Mum made them for him for our first probably 35 years together but hasn’t been up to it the last number of years . I bought PC brand ones this year for him. Not as good. You have inspired me to try and make my own next year. Take care!❤️

Same here. I made my own last year and it was WAY better than the jarred stuff. Sadly, it is not on my IC diet and I don’t want anything to flare up again so I will have to skip my traditional Christmas breakfast of mince pie. I’m making a peach trifle but it’s not the same.

  4. The pies look incredible Val! When I was a child I couldn’t figure out anyone would eat minceMEAT pies for dessert. I thought they were MEAT! I’ve avoided them all of these years until our daughter-in-law “T” came into our lives. She brings mincemeat tarts every year for our Thanksgiving celebration with them. We all love them. Especially Mandy and I. If your’s are good, (and I’m sure they will be amazing), would you share the recipe? I would like to try my hand at some.
I hope today was incredible for you and Dave and your family.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy
