Weird and wonderful

One of my favourite things about visiting nurseries and garden centres is finding new, unique plants. And I’ve found several this year.

This plant, with is cool red/yellow pea-like flower is called Scotch Broom. It’s a flowering shrub, and I was so drawn to those firey flowers.

This is a Chenille plant and I’ve never seen anything like it! Apparently it does well as a house plant, so I’ll definitely be bringing it inside when the weather turns colder.

A few years back, my passion flower died. So I was thrilled to find another one. This one is more blue than my old one (which was more white). Like the chenille plant, this will come in for the winter. I just need to find a really sunny spot!

Long time readers may remember my Navy Lady rose. She was one of my favourites, and sadly, she did not suvive the move. I’ve been looking for another one since then, and I finally found her!

But in tree form! I’ve wanted a tree rose FOREVER, so finding Navy Lady as one was just icing on the cake. As you can see, I’ve put her in the sunny border of the woodland garden. Her height helps enclose the space just a little more.

What’s weird and wonderful in your garden?

  1. Those are some wild things! The one thing I love about the MDSW is that the plant people there always bring some things you never find in the local nurseries. I’ve got several crazy perennials from them but I have no idea what they are because I lost the tags.

Your new plants are so beautiful! You are adding so much color and beauty to your yard/gardens. The neighbors must love seeing all the changes.

You definitely have some strange looking plants there Val. But I do like them all. Especially the rose. I don’t think I’ve seen one as a tree before. Very cool.

  4. I remember a chenille plant that my son gave me for Mother’s Day when he was in kindergarten. He called it a tails plant. So cute! Long gone.

I had a volunteer passionflower vine in my backyard (thanks, birds!). It eventually got too happy, and I had to cut it down. It came right back! We chopped it down again, as well as the dead bamboo it was using as an arbor. It felt almost like an alien invasion. It does make little fruits, but I never tried to make anything with them.

No new plants this year. But I really need to dig up and divide the irises this fall. They have spread like crazy, but they’re too crowded to bloom much right now.

Peonies are tight buds, waiting to burst into bloom! They will by the end of the week, sunshine is on its way back. Currently only 60 degrees F here, will be 80F by the end of the week.

    Happy gardening!
