The trouble with Furby

By mid-spring, it seemed like we were finally starting to make some progress between Furby and the rest of the boys. There were still scuffles… but they were much fewer, and shorter for the most part.

He was content to come in around 10 or 11 each night, and stay in until morning.

But then the weather warmed up.

Now he’ll come in a night… but he doesn’t want to stay in. He howls, he cries, and he starts fights with the boys. So… I’ve had to give in and let him stay out all night. I’ve checked the cameras in the morning, and he mostly does circles around the house all night. Patrolling his territory, I suppose.

And, unless it’s raining, he really only comes in to eat or occasionally check on us and get some attention.

He’s just determined to be an outside cat.

Even when it’s sweltering hot…

I’m pretty sure the neighbours are going to think I’m neglecting him.

He’s just happiest outside. But he loves it when we are outside too.

If I’m in the garden, he’s never far away.

Indoor cat he’ll never be, but I do love having him as a friend in the yard!

Valerie, it is so hard taking in a former stray cay that loves to be outside. Miss Kitty was the same the first couple summers after we took her in. Basically it was her older age that finally curbed her wandering at night. She came in after supper and then stayed in all night. She too loved to garden with us. The first summer after she was gone it was hard having no gardening companion. We have acquired a new visiting kitty this year. No idea who he belongs too but he keeps me company while I am gardening.

  2. That’s how our Louise is. She is the last of the rescued ferals who comes in and out. Now that it’s nice, she wants to be out all the time. She howls like a demon if we don’t let her out. She’ll smack at her inside only brother and sister if they dare go near the door that she wants out of. She’s deaf now so I don’t like her out if we aren’t home but trying to find her in this jungle to bring her back in isn’t easy. It’s spoiled many a outing for us because I won’t leave her.

Furby is such a pretty cat. Mabel will never be an indoor cat either. Though I am happy that she now stays in almost every night.

  4. Sometimes you have to accept the hard parts of cat ownership. If it matters at all, I think you are doing the right thing. Stressing him and your other cats isn’t good. This way he is “taken care of”, but respecting what he wants as well.
