And now for something completely different…

It’s Wednesday so I figure you’re expecting another butterfly post…

But I don’t like to be predictable. So… how do you feel about grasshoppers????

It’s grasshopper city in the garden right now. They are EVERYWHERE!

I know in large numbers, they can be very destructive, but that’s never been a problem in any of my gardens.

The cats find them endlessly entertaining.

Especially Furby. I saved this one from him a couple weeks ago – but not before he managed to chew one of the hopping legs off.

A few days later, he brought one inside the house and dropped it off at my feet as a gift. Both hopping legs gone this time – but yes, otherwise alive.

Happily, that’s the only one that made it into the house.

Though I did spend about 20 minutes thinking my fridge was on the fritz because of a high-pitched noise coming from the kitchen. Eventually I found the source..

If there’s one thing we have more of than grasshoppers… it’s crickets! But I don’t need them in the house.

  1. As much as I appreciate and nurture insects in the garden, any that get inside the house make me ick!

When working at our old office, we had crickets who chirped all day long, and I took it upon myself to locate and re-home them outside.

But…they are gross, and surprisingly hard to find when under commercial equipment.

Thankfully, the custodial staff helped me move a few items, and I used a paper coffee cup to catch the critters, then no more crickets cricketing all day while we worked.

  2. We’ve had a cricket in here for a few days and it’s driving me crazy. My serial killer kitty, Gracie, hasn’t found it yet or it would be gone. I’m sad to say she managed to murder an errant skink this week that somehow got into the house. I was not amused.

  3. Furby, Furby, Furby. Can’t tame the hunter!

I remember lots of grasshoppers when I was growing up. We had to catch them for a science class in 7th or 8th grade. Easy peasy. But I don’t see many of them any more.
